Children's Head Injuries Should Be Taken Seriously

Each year more than 60,000 American children are hospitalized with traumatic brain injuries.

Neurology Chief Jay Selman of Blythedale Hospital in Westchester, says if your child hits his head, you should take it seriously, especially if there's a change in behavior or school performance.

He says the most common causes of traumatic brain injuries in kids involve falls, biking or skateboarding accidents, plus car crashes, diving and other sports. Dr. Selman says you can help reduce the risk by teaching your child to avoid risky behavior and to wear the right helmet for the right sport.
