Many people think gaining a few pounds on their vacations is okay because they'll lose it once they're back to the grind. But, corporate dietitian Courtney McCormick says these few pounds can easily spiral out of control.

A 2016 University of Georgia study found the average American gains about three-quarters of a pound while on vacation. When participants were weighed six weeks after the study, the three-quarters of a pound didn't go away. Some of the 122 adults studied even gained as much as seven pounds on their vacations.

Scientists are calling this occurrence "creeping obesity." It's described as gaining a few pounds each year that you think will be temporary weight gain, but it ends up sticking permanently. Experts recommend watching alcohol intake, staying active and bringing your own snacks to avoid unwanted weight gain.

Dietitian Courtney McCormick says you don't have to sacrifice fun when staying active. McCormick says having a disciplined schedule could be the best way to keep weight off.
