A new study says exercise can't beat pollution. British researchers found the build-up of polluted air in city centers prevents the heart and lungs from realizing the benefits exercise usually provides.

The scientists compared the effects of people who took a two-hour walk in London's Hyde Park and a two-hour stroll down the city's busy Oxford Street shopping area. They found the lung capacity and blood flow of everyone in the study improved after walking through the park. The walk along Oxford Street showed next to no improvement.

The study is published in the latest edition of the British medical journal "The Lancet."
