Americans are not just living longer, more of them are reaching beyond their 100th birthday.

A new report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the number of Americans turning 100 has increased about 44 percent since the turn of the century. The report attributed better medical care and healthier lifestyles for the rising number of centenarians.

There were slightly more than 72-thousand Americans 100-years-old or older in the U.S. in 2014, compared with about 50-thousand in 2000. The report also shows more than 80 percent of U.S. centenarians are women.
